Angels ~ Angelos

Scripture speaks of when angels were created. Angels were created before the creation of the world. When God was asking Job where he was when…. Job 38:7 “when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” The term “sons of God” here means angels.

Creation of angels is shown in Psalm 148:2, Psalm of praises from creation.
Colossians 1:16 “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.”

Angels are mentioned in 34 books of the Bible and mentioned 275 times.
There are thousands and thousands of angels. Psalm 68:17, Revelation 5:11. Hebrews 12:22 says “an innumerable company of angels”
Hebrews 1:14 “are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?” Psalm 104:4, 91:11-12, 2Kings 6:15-17, Matthew 4:11
Ministries of Angels ~
They bless the Lord in 5 ways ~
Psalm 103:20-21 “Bless the Lord, you His angels, who excel in strength (strength, God’s power, might, authority), who do His word, heeding the voice of His word. Bless the Lord, all you His hosts. You ministers of His, who do His pleasure.”
Worship and praise
Do His Word ~ God’s voice
Heed the voice of God’s Word (as it is spoken by us ~ His saints)
Minister on God’s behalf
Do God’s pleasure (at God’s direction)

Minister to Christ:
Predicted & announced His birth, protected Him, strengthened Him after temptation & in Gethsemane, rolled away the stone of tomb, announced the resurrection

Minister to Believers:
Messengers, guiding, providing, protecting, delivering, strengthening and encouraging, answering prayer, caring for believers at time of death and executioners (angel of death).
Minister to the nations:
Michael has a special relationship to Israel ~ Daniel 12:1
Angels will be involved in the judgments of the Tribulation ~ Revelation 8,9,16

Minister to unbelievers:
Announce coming judgments ~ Genesis 19:13 (destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah) Revelation14:6-7 (proclamation of the angels)
Bring punishment ~ Acts 12:23 (Herod’s death)
They act as the reapers ~ Matthew 13:39 parable of the tares explained

Personality of Angels (have a soul) ~
Intellect: they are messengers and do the bidding of God and His Word. I Peter 1:12 (preached by Holy Spirit the gospel to the OT prophets)
Emotion: Genesis 19:10-11 (Sodom),19:17,26 (instructions to Lot-turned Lot’s wife into a pillar of salt) Luke1:13-20 (Zacharias-caused him to be mute so he couldn’t curse God’s plan with his words ), 2:13-14 (declaring Christ’s birth)
Will: Jude 6 ~ the fallen angels; they can make decisions

Characteristics of Angels ~ God created angels different than man, they are not offered redemption and they are designated by masculine gender in scripture.

They are spirit beings ~ Hebrews 1:14
Can’t reproduce after their own kind ~ Mark 12:25
They do not die ~ Luke 20:36
They are different than human beings ~ Psalm 8:4-5.
They have great power & knowledge ~ 2 Peter 2:11
Enforce blessings ~ Genesis 24:40, Galatians 3:13-14
Hearken to the Word of God ~ Psalm 103:20, Daniel 10:12. Activated by and sensitive to the spoken Word of God.
Supernatural ~ spirit beings
Don’t sleep ~
They can be provoked ~ Lots wife provoked and defied the angel of the Lord (rebellion & disobedience), Moses – Exodus 23:20-23 “beware of him and obey his voice, do not provoke him for he will not pardon your transgressions” Zacharias – Luke 1:11-15,18

Possible Order of Angels ~
Cherubim ~ Possibly the highest ranking and are described as angelic or celestial beings or living creatures, full of eyes in the front and back; always being watchful. They guardians of Eden, flanking God’s throne, hovering over the Arc of the Covenant. Ps. 99:1, Rev 4:6.
Seraphim ~ means a burning fiery, gliding, also fire colored, agile. They maybe angels of a fiery color or appearance or flame like in motion. They are described as majestic angelic beings with 6 wings, human hands or voices in attendance to God. The stay close to the throne of God, are seen constantly glorifying God, extolling His nature and attributes. Maybe supervise heavens worship.

Chief Princes ~ One is named Michael – Daniel 10:13, Jude 9
Ruling Angels ~ Ephesians 3:10
Guardian Angels ~ Hebrews 1:14, Matthew 18:10
Elect Angels ~ I Timothy 5:21
